Welcome to the Recreation Department’s Girls' Lacrosse program!

Program Information

K-2 Lacrosse:

Ages: Boys and girls in Kindergarten through 2nd grade

When: TBA

Where: Middle School Lacrosse Fields

Cost: $15 and will include a tee shirt.

Program Design:  The program is designed to teach the basic skills of lacrosse such as throwing, catching, and scooping through various fun drills and games. The season will progress towards an end of season game/event.  Parents are needed to coach these drills with the assistance of the high school players and older youth coaches.

Equipment:  Participants must provide a lacrosse stick and those can be purchased at any sporting goods store.

Grade 3-8 Lacrosse:

Girls’ Youth Lacrosse is a non-contact sport that is played with 12 players.  The game is a combination of the fast pace of soccer and the concepts of basketball which involves passing, shooting, catching and scooping with a lacrosse stick.  You can be big or small to play lacrosse and it is a sport of continual motion, which allows everyone to become involved on the field.  Hard boundaries have been added this season, which should make for an interesting change.  For more information about the sport, visit the US Lacrosse website at www.lacrosse.org.

Ages: Three age divisions (grades 3/4, grades 5/6, and grades 7/8)

Practices/Games: Practices will start in late March or early April.  Games will start around mid-April and will run through the mid-late June.  Teams will travel to parts of Western Massachusetts and parts of Connecticut.  You will play games or practice between 2 and 4 (at most) times a week.  There may be some preseason practices held indoors and will be announced as the season approaches.  Sneakers must be worn indoors.  South Hadley games and practices will be held at the Town Farm or Michael E. Smith Middle School fields.

Equipment: Girls’ lacrosse is played without much equipment.  You will need to supply the following: a stick (any price range will do), cleats and goggles (the Rec. Dept has a few goggles remaining for those with financial hardship).  The Recreation Department will provide mouth pieces, uniforms and goalie equipment.  You will be able to ask questions about equipment at the parents meeting and some of the different options will be available for your review.

Mouth guard:
outh guards are mandatory for all players.  The Recreation Department will provide you with a standard mouth piece.  Many local dentists will make a custom fit mouth guard for you at little-no cost.  If your child has braces, these mouthpieces will not be adequate and you will have to consult with your orthodontist.

Lacrosse Shorts: The Recreation Department will supply each 5-8th grade player with a black skirt that needs to be returned at the end of the season.  The Rec. Dept. has some South Hadley lacrosse shorts available for purchase at the Recreation office for $22.  These would be great for practices and for working out!

Tournaments: The teams will enter some tournaments which are typically held on weekends.  A nominal tournament fee may be charged; however fundraising through the teams will help pay the tournament fees.  Your user fee helps to cover the cost of one tournament (maybe more depending on total participants).  Game times for tournaments will be announced as the information becomes available.
