Free Compost
All year long the Town of South Hadley Compost Area takes in yard waste (brush/logs, grass & leaves) from residents.  These materials are stockpiled separately, with grass and leaves in one pile and brush and logs in another.  Once quanitites are high enough, the brush materials are ground and then windrowed to be composted.  The grass and leaves are windrowed as is and composted, and then screened once composting is finished.  The finished compost is tested at the Soil Lab at the University of Massachusetts to ensure quality, and then this finished compost is made available for free to Town Residents.  During the spring and summer months, compost is placed outside the DPW fence on Industrial Drive, and is available 7 days a week.  This is in the same bunker where the sand/salt mix is available for residents during the fall and winter months.
