Water Pollution Control Division - DPW
Water Pollution Dept Image
The Water Pollution Control Division of the DPW provides oversight, management and / or treatment of the various types of "dirty waters" generated within the Town, as well as stormwater.  Various programs under this Division include Inflow and Infiltration (I & I) into the sewer system, Stormwater Compliance for both the Town of South Hadley (Phase II) and the treatment plant, and the regulation and oversight of commercial and industrial wastewaters (IPP) to protect both the treatment plant and our natural resources.

The South Hadley Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is located just over the line in the City of Chicopee. The WWTP is responsible for cleaning and treating Town wastewater to levels specified by both the MA Department of Environmental Protection (MA DEP) and the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Cleaned and treated wastewater is discharged into the Connecticut River, in accordance with a NPDES Permit. The Permit also includes specific requirements for several of the above referenced programs, as well as sewer system maintenance. The WWTP has just completed an extensive upgrade, which also included two of the pump stations. Obsolete, old and/or worn equipment was replaced with new, energy efficient models, tanks were repaired, an odor control system was installed in the press room, and a SCADA system was installed to allow remote monitoring and control of processes and equipment.
